Midwest Rowing Championships - CANCELLED
April 23, 2005 - Madison WI
Submitted by Paul Capobianco
Conditions: The first heat of the men's novice four was raced, but that was all that was run as high winds caused cancellation of the 33rd annual Midwest Rowing Championships. After a boat from the University of Chicago swamped and sank, racing was called off on Saturday.
After three weeks of excellent rowing weather in the Madison area, winds in the 20 mile-per-hour range, with gusts up to 30 miles per hour caused choppy water conditions in the first half of the Lake Wingra course. Temperatures at the start of the day were in the 30s, with wind chills making the temperatures feel like the 20s.
The combination of high winds and cold air temperatures forced race officials to suspend racing because of unsafe racing conditions.
