Windy City indeed

Due to some potential lightning and severe thundershowers Chicago Rowing Union had to conduct indoor rowing practice at the Dammrich Rowing Center. While we were inside using the tanks and ergs the rain could be seen blowing sideways. By the time we left it was still pretty bad out so we ran to our cars and hurried home before the next barrage of storms. This morning when the competitive team returned for 5AM practice we could see that one of the racks holding boats from other clubs that use the facility had blown a good 8 feet to the west and completely turned upside down. Boats that were securely strapped remained affixed to the rack but a couple came undone and fell. I am not sure of the full extent of the damages but from the looks of it there will be crushed honeycomb on the boats that ended up taking the chain link fence posts to the sides and the one Vespoli that landed guts up in front might have keel damage. I think most if not all the boats belong to New Trier High School and other high schools that use the facility. Northwestern, NSC, North Park and CRU's and I think Loyola's boats were spared.

During the spring, our river was always running very high and was constantly full of debris. We kept on losing skegs, so this sign appeared in our boathouse. We've made it up all the way to 4 now (with a previous record of 4).

Here are some NAC boys in front of the Cheyenne, which set the crossing record for the Atlantic as a sailboat and has now been transformed into the launching platform for the Virgin Oceanic submarine. Would have taken a photo with them rowing under it but ropes and buoys had been put up to prevent just that.

A sudden wind squall out of the south caused 3 foot waves on the Merrimack River in Manchester, NH. Central Crew Club's varsity 8 ended up having a few waves crash over the bow, swamping the boat. What a day!
