Weld Boathouse's Anniversary Sculpture
Submitted by: John Flory
(October 12, 2009)
Ellen Kennelly's new suspended glass rowing sculpture "Endurance" was dedicated Sunday October 4th in Weld Boathouse in Cambridge, MA. Commissioned by the Friends of Harvard and Radcliffe Rowing to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Weld Boathouse, "Endurance" evokes the passage of a single scull through the water. Suspended eighteen feet overhead in the skylit barrel-vaulted ceiling space of the boathouse's upstairs atrium, the forty foot long sculpture consists of three pairs of oar puddles plus the bow and stern wakes of the hull, all fashioned from 1000 feet of flameworked glass rod. Kennelly was solely responsible for the concept, site selection, design, creation, and installation of the work. Despite her years of experience as a masters single sculler, she needed to study the surface patterns resulting from a single scull's movement through the water when viewed from above. The result is both a technical tour de force and a work of transcendent beauty.

After I saw today's submission of Tiff in the single, thought I should send this one in... from the same race (Head of the Dog). This was the winning entry in the Best of Breed costume competition.
Lewis & Clark College Varsity Men put this one together, the theme was "Apocalypse Now". The creation included "Ride of the Valkyries" played over the cox-box as well as a smoke bomb set off with about 500 meters to go. We're working on editing up the video.
