Racing at the 2007 USRowing National Championships began Thursday with time trials and heats in eight events at Mercer Lake in West Windsor, N.J.
Heat winners in the men's four, women's quadruple sculls, men's pair, women's eight and men's eight advanced to Saturday's finals, while the remaining crews will race Friday in repechages, or second-chance races.
In the first heat of the men's four, Caspersen Training Center finished first in a 5:49.14 to advance to Saturday's final. The lineup of Bryan Volpenhein, Dan Walsh, Matt Schnobrich, and Beau Hoopman crossed the line 4.5 seconds ahead of the Caspersen B boat's time of 5:53.62. UTS Rowing Club finished third in a 6:14.16, followed by Vesper Boat Club. In the second heat, the Caspersen lineup of Cameron Winklevoss, Tyler Winklevoss, Sebastian Bea, and Gabe Winkler defeated the competition to advance, finishing in a 6:11.37. Penn A.C. Rowing Association took second place with a time of 6:15.65, followed by Vesper Boat Club with a 6:39.73.
In the women's quadruple sculls, the Canadian crew of Rachelle De Jong, Janine Hanson, Krista Guloien, and Anne-Marie De Zwager finished with the fastest time in first heat. Racing unaffiliated, the crew clocked a 6:22.63 to advance to the final. Vesper Boat Club crossed the line second in a 6:27.69, followed by three Caspersen Training Center boats. In the second heat, Caspersen's A entry of Liane Malcos, Ellen Tomek, Christen Brown, and Lia Pernell clocked a 6:29.50 to advance to the final. Caspersen B finished in a 6:33.81 for second place, followed by Undine Barge Club and Potomac Boat Club.
The Caspersen Training Center duo of Cameron and Tyler Winklevoss led the pack in the first heat of the men's pair. The brothers clocked a 6:55.23 to advance to the final, nearly 16 seconds ahead of second-place Leander Boat Club. Two Vesper Boat Club crews finished third and fourth, respectively. In the second heat, Sebastian Bea and Gabe Winkler of Caspersen Training Center clocked the fastest time, finishing in a 6:46.37 advancing to the final. Teammates Chris Callaghan and Troy Kepper finished second in a 6:56.34, followed by Penn A.C. and Mercer Junior Rowing Club.
In the first heat of the women's eight, Caspersen Training Center won in a 6:17.80. The crew of coxswain Ariel Frost, Anne Kennedy, Jamie Redman, Elle Logan, Kate Davison, Mara Allen, Tara O'Connell, Amanda Polk, and Kerry Birk advanced to the final. The second-place unaffiliated crew from Canada clocked a 6:29.88, followed by New York Athletic Club in a 6:36.79 and Vesper Boat Club in a 7:10.99. In the second heat, Caspersen Training Center's top boat clocked a 6:11.22 to advance to the final. The crew of coxswain Mary Whipple, Susan Francia, Caroline Lind, Rachel Jeffers, Megan Dirkmaat, Sam Magee, Erin Cafaro, Portia McGee, and Brett Sickler finished in first place, ahead of the unaffiliated entry from Canada's London Training Center. The Caspersen C boat finished third in a 6:29.85, followed by Vesper Boat Club in fourth.
Caspersen Training Center led the field in the first heat of the men's eight, finishing in a 5:34.85. The crew of coxswain Ned DelGuercio, Jason Read, Steven Coppola, Patrick O'Dunne, Brett Newlin, Matt Deakin, Dan Berry, Sam Burns, and Alex Hearne advanced to Saturday's final. Penn A.C finished in second place with a 6:00.76, followed by Vesper Boat Club in a 6:08.16. In the second heat, the Caspersen A boat crossed the line in first place. The crew of coxswain Marcus McElhenney, Beau Hoopman, Bryan Volpenhein, Dan Walsh, Chris Liwski, Josh Inman, Wyatt Allen, Guiseppe Lanzone, and Matt Schnobrich clocked a 5:36.75 to advance to the final. The Caspersen C boat finished second in a 5:40.99, followed by Bantam Boat Club and Vesper Boat Club.
Twelve boats advanced to Friday's heats from the time trials in the men's single sculls, women's single sculls, and lightweight women's single sculls events.
Potomac Boat Club's Jamie Schroeder clocked the fastest time in the time trial of the men's single sculls, finishing in a 7:01.01. Schroeder, a four-time senior national team member, represented the United States in the event at last year's world championships and will race the single at the 2007 Pan American Games in Brazil this July. Princeton Training Center's Warren Anderson, who will race in the quadruple sculls with Schroeder at the Pan American Games, placed second in a 7:04.88. Racing unaffiliated, Thomas Williamson followed in a 7:06.55.
In the time trial of the lightweight women's single sculls, Caspersen Training Center's Renee Hykel led the field with the fastest time of 7:37.01. Teammate Julie Nichols followed in a 7:44.01. Hykel and Nichols have represented the U.S. as boatmates in the lightweight double sculls at the past two world championships.
Undine Barge Club's Shannon Kaplan, who won the event at last year's national championships, clocked the fastest time in the time trial of the women's single sculls. Kaplan finished in a 7:53.62. Teammate Beth Greene followed in a 7:55.02, while Saugatuck Rowing Club's Amanda Kendrick crossed third in a 7:56.61.
