INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. -- USRowing has named Steve Hargis as its new junior women's national team head coach, Executive Director John H. Dane announced Monday.
Hargis, who is the director of rowing at the United States Coast Guard Academy, replaces Ohio State's Robbie Tenenbaum.
"I am honored to be presented the opportunity to coach the Junior Women's National Team," Hargis said. "I look forward to being an active partner with all of the junior and high school coaches throughout the country to strengthen the junior national team system. In the end, this can only serve to inspire junior rowers throughout the country to strive towards excellence and dedication to the sport."
For the past five years, Hargis has served as the head coach of the U.S. Junior National Team Development Camp. Many of his development camp athletes have gone on to make the junior world championships teams and one has gone on to the senior national team development program. His development camp crews have won five U.S. National Championships and three CanAmMex gold medals in the past four years.
In addition to his director of rowing duties at Coast Guard, Hargis has served as the women's head coach for the Division III program since 1998. Last season, he was named the Collegiate Rowing Association's Division III National Coach of the Year. During his tenure, Hargis has had several successful seasons including leading the program to an NCAA Championships team bid, the first ever NCAA bid for any Coast Guard sport.
Hargis, who also teaches eighth grade math at East Lyme Middle School, is a 1980 graduate of the U.S. Coast Guard Academy. While at Coast Guard, he won several medals at the Dad Vail Championships. Hargis also is a multiple-time U.S. national champion. He is the founder of the junior program of the Toledo Rowing Club and has coached at both Toledo and East Lyme High School.
