Today was the final day of the 2010 World Rowing Junior Championships in Racice, Czech Republic.
Canada ended its Junior Worlds on a positive note, with the men's eight having a solid performance. Leading the whole way down the course, Canada won its B final in 5:50.95 to achieve an overall seventh place rank in this event. Russia followed (5:54.48), then New Zealand in 5:55.95, Spain in 5:58.5, France (5:58.71) and the Ukraine in 6:03.94.
"The guys in the eight are really proud of their race," said National Junior coach/coordinator Gavin McKay. "It was their most complete race of the championships and we hope that the experience serves them well in the future."
The Canadian eight is Trofym Anderson of Welland Ont. (South Niagara Rowing Club), Coleman Bak of Brockville, Ont. (Brockville Rowing Club), Spencer Freeman of Calgary, AB (Calgary Rowing Club), Jamie Law-Smith of Montreal (Montreal Rowing Club/Dawson College), Quinten Richardson of Vancouver, B.C. (Shawnigan Lake School), Steven Marino of Victoria (St. George's School), Christopher Marshall of Brockville (Brockville Rowing Club), Pat O'Shaughnessy-Hunter of Brockville (Brockville Rowing Club), and Ryan Sanders of St. Catharines (St. Catharines Rowing Club).
The men's quad was scheduled to row in a D final today, but did not compete due to an illness of a crew member. Yesterday, the Junior women's quad finished ninth overall.
"The Junior Worlds is a great opportunity to see where our athletes rank, and the direction our development system needs to move in the future," said Chuck McDiarmid, Rowing Canada High Performance Development Coordinator. "It was unfortunate that the men's quad was battling illness, but the whole team's spirits rose with the performance of the men's eight today."
The Junior World Championship is held annually for rowers 18 and younger.
