The Commonwealth Rowing Championships concluded today in Welland, Ont. - Canada won the overall points standings with 186 - followed by Scotland with 153 and Australia earning 134 points.
On this second day of racing, Canada won three gold medals, which included a win in the women's quad in a time of 06:50.53 (2000 metres). The Canadians were followed by England in 6:59.77 and Scotland in 7:07.86.
This crew consisted of Laura Cowal of Thorold, ON, Lauren Wilkinson of North Vancouver, BC, Elizabeth Fenje of Victoria, BC and Patricia Obee, also of Victoria.
"We met before the race and agreed on our objective. We knew coming first in this race would give Canada the points it needed to forge ahead in the overall standings. We surprised ourselves with how well we could gel with such limited practice time," said Cowal, who also finished a close fourth in the women's single dash today.
"We really wanted this for Canada," Obee added.
Women's team member Elizabeth Fenje went on to win the lightweight women's single dash (500 metres) this afternoon in a time of 1:56.14.
Josh Morris of Victoria took Canada's third gold of the day in the men's single dash, winning in 1:37.94.
"All the crews performed well and I'm proud of the guys really pulling together after competing at the World Under 23s (last weekend in Belarus)," said men's coach Paul Hawksworth. "It was a great opportunity to race against other Commonwealth countries at home."
The rest of the men's team from Canada consisted of Michael Lewis, Dorchester, ON, Kristjan Joubert of St.-Lambert, QC and Thomas Watson of Victoria, BC. All the Canadians competed in different events over the two-day competition and all reached the podium. The event also included a mixed exhibition eights race.
The regatta was hosted by the Welland International Flatwater Centre over two days under excellent racing conditions.
"It was a great regatta, with all the participating countries finding their way to the podium over the course of the competition," said Brenda Liski, President of the Commonwealth Rowing Association. "The community showed its hospitality and we are very happy to have witnessed some great racing here in Welland."
