After a long day of semi-finals and finals, Canada came away with a medal from the Lucerne World Cup, and a chance to reach the podium again tomorrow when finals continue.
Lightweight men's single Doug Vandor of Dewittville, Que., won Canada's first medal, a silver, at the 2006 Lucerne World Cup. Vandor's time was 7:13.70.
"I drew confidence from the heat and semi (raced earlier today)," said Vandor. "I've trained in the single for a year and a half, but I'm still learning how to race in the single. I just pretended it was a time trial, and that seemed to work well."
Britain's Zac Purchase won gold in 7:08.38. Jeff Bujas of Grimsby, Ont., finished ninth overall in the same event.
Mara Jones of Aurora, Ont. and Tracy Cameron of Shubenacadie, N.S., are on track to have a competitive final in the lightweight women's double tomorrow, after winning their semi-final today in 7:01.81.
The lightweight men's double of Matt Jensen of Innerkip, Ont., and Liam Parsons of Thunder Bay, Ont., just missed the chance to advance to the A final, after a close fourth-place finish in today's semi. Canada's time was 6:22.40, behind the British double who took the third and final qualifying spot in 6:22.03.
The lightweight men's four of John Sasi of Vancouver, B.C., Mike Lewis of Victoria, Terry McKall of Edmonton, Alta., and Iain Brambell of Victoria, B.C., finished sixth in the semi-final in a time of 6:07.83 and will not have a chance at a medal.
It was warm and the water was flat today on the Rotsee course in Lucerne.
