The United States will have 15 boats racing this weekend at the third and final stop of the 2009 Rowing World Cup in Lucerne, Switzerland. USRowing will be sending two crews in both the women's pair and lightweight men's double sculls and one boat each in the men's single sculls, men's pair, women's double sculls, men's double sculls, lightweight women's double sculls, men's four, lightweight men's four, women's quadruple sculls, men's quadruple sculls, women's eight and men's eight.
In the men's single sculls, Warren Anderson (Paso Robles, Calif.) will race against 24 other single scullers. Anderson, a two-time national team member, finished ninth at both of the world cup regattas earlier in the season.
In the women's pair, the U.S. will have two of the 10 entries. Caroline Lind (Greensboro, N.C.) and Susan Francia (Abington, Pa.) will race in one pair, while Erin Cafaro (Modesto, Calif.) will row with Mara Allen (San Francisco, Calif.) in the other pair.
The four rowers also will race in the women's eight. The crew of Katelin Snyder (Winter Park, Fla.), Francia, Lind, Kady Glessner (Seattle, Wash.), Anna Goodale (Camden, Maine), Allen, Esther Lofgren (Newport Beach, Calif.), Lindsay Shoop (Charlottesville, Va.) and Cafaro will take on five other crews. Francia, Lind, Goodale, Shoop and Cafaro return from the eight that won the gold medal at the 2008 Olympic Games, while Snyder, Glessner, Allen and Lofgren all have under 23 or senior national team experience.
Charlie Cole (New Canaan, Conn.) and David Banks (Potomac, Md.), a 2008 Olympian, will race 13 other crews in the men's pair. At this year's first world cup regatta in Spain, the duo won the B final to finish seventh overall.
In the women's double sculls, Ellen Tomek (Flushing, Mich.) and Megan Kalmoe (St. Croix Falls, Wis.), who finished fifth in the event at the 2008 Olympic Games, will race 10 other crews.
In the men's double sculls, Stephen Whelpley (Mequon, Wis.) and Michael Sivigny (Londonderry, N.H.) will be racing in their first world cup event. The duo will take on 16 other crews.
Michelle Trannel (East Dubuque, Ill.) and Kristin Hedstrom (Concord, Mass.) will take on 15 other crews in the lightweight women's double sculls. Trannel has made one senior national team, while Hedstrom is a two-time under 23 national team member.
In the lightweight men's double sculls, the U.S. has two of the 22 entries. The duo of Andy Quinn (Honeoye Falls, N.Y.) and Shane Madden (Ambler, Pa.) finished 10th overall at the first world cup regatta, while Brian Tryon (Indianapolis, Ind.) and Jonathan Winter (New Haven, Conn.) will be racing at their first world cup together.
The men's four crew of Brett Newlin (Riverton, Wyo.), Jake Cornelius (Brooktondale, N.Y.), Steve Coppola (Buffalo, N.Y.) and Cameron Winklevoss (Greenwich, Conn.) is one of 10 entries in the event. Newlin, Coppola and Winklevoss were all members of the 2008 Olympic Team, with Coppola winning a bronze medal in the men's eight.
In the lightweight men's four, the crew of Will Daly (Vail, Colo.), Brian DeRegt (Rowayton, Conn.), Matt Muffelman (Mathews, Va.) and Taylor Washburn (Andover, Mass.) will take on 14 other crews. Daly is the lone Olympian in the boat, while Muffelman is a three-time senior national team member.
The women's quadruple sculls crew of Kathleen Bertko (Oakland, Calif.), Jen Kaido (West Leyden, N.Y.), Stesha Carle (Long Beach, Calif.) and Megan Walsh (Charlotte, N.C.) will race against six other crews. Kaido rowed in the quad at last year's Olympics, while Carle won a silver medal in the women's four at the 2008 FISA Senior and Junior World Championships.
The men's quadruple sculls quartet of Elliot Hovey (Manchester-By-The-Sea, Mass.), Will Miller (Duxbury, Mass.), Glenn Ochal (Philadelphia, Pa.) and Sam Stitt (McLean, Va.) will take on eight other crews. Hovey and Stitt were members of the 2008 Olympic Team, while Miller and Ochal are past under 23 national team members. At the first world cup regatta in Spain, Stitt and Ochal reached the final of the men's double sculls, finishing fifth.
The men's eight of Ned DelGuercio (Media, Pa.), Ross James (DeKalb, Ill.), Grant James (DeKalb, Ill.), Alex Osborne (Sherman Oaks, Calif.), Henrik Rummel (Pittsford, N.Y.), Giuseppe Lanzone (Annandale, Va.), Michael Holbrook (Madison, Wis.), Stephen Kasprzyk (Cinnaminson, N.J.) and Beau Hoopman (Plymouth, Wis.) will face seven other crews. Hoopman is a two-time Olympic medalist, while Lanzone was a member of the men's four at last year's Olympics. The James brothers, Osborne and Rummel won gold in the eight at last year's under 23 world championships, while DelGuercio and Kasprzyk have senior national team experience.
Racing begins Friday at 9:00 a.m. local time with heats, repechages and quarterfinals. Semifinals and finals in the international events will be held Saturday beginning at 9:30 a.m. Finals in the 14 world cup events will be held Sunday beginning at 9:30 a.m. Heat sheets and individual race times will be available on Thursday afternoon, following the draw.
More than 650 athletes from 39 nations have entered the regatta. Event finals will be video streamed live on Sunday and can be accessed on www.worldrowing.com. The Rowing World Cup series was launched in 1997 and includes all 14 Olympic boat classes. The overall Rowing World Cup champions will be determined after a series of three regattas. This other two regattas were held May 29-31 in Banyoles, Spain, and June 19-21 in Munich, Germany.
