Canada had two fifth place finishes today, and has two more finals to come tomorrow, at the World Rowing Under 23 Championships in Linz-Ottensheim, Austria.
In the men's coxed four A final, Italy was first in 6:17.73, New Zealand second in 6:19.90, Germany picked up bronze in 6:21.33 - followed by Australia (6:25.03), Canada (6:31.09) and France (6:32.20).
In this event, Canada was represented by Robert Gage of Hamilton, ON, Alexander Janzen of Langley BC, William O'Connell of Victoria, BC, Trofym Anderson of Welland, ON, and coxswain Jacob Koudys of Fonthill, ON.
"All the crews have learned a lot from this experience," said Rowing Canada Aviron men's development coach, Terry Paul. "The four raced as hard as they could, and I was proud of the way they performed. I'm excited about the momentum we've got going with this group."
Maxwell Lattimer of Delta, BC, and Evan Cheng of Vancouver, BC, were also fifth. The lightweight men's pair event played out with reigning champs from Italy again winning gold in 6:45.45; Great Britain in second in 6:47.83; the Czech Republic in third in 6:50.13; followed by Hungary (6:53.86), Canada (6:56.62) and Germany (7:00.60).
In other racing, Carling Zeeman of Cambridge, ON, was second in her singles semi, positioning herself nicely for the A final tomorrow. Germany won the semi in 7:38.98, and then Zeeman of Canada in 7:42.22, followed by Austria in 7:49.91.
Zeeman and the women's eight, based on its performance yesterday, will race in A finals tomorrow.
Men's single, Ben Murphy of Markham, ON, was fifth in his semi-final race, and goes to the B final. The winner of this semi was Romania 7:06.58; Canada’s time was 7:23.59.
The Canadian men's double also goes to the to B final, after a fifth-place finish in 6:37.56 in today’s semi. Pascal Lussier of Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu and Paul Thiessen of Mitchell, MB, is the U23 double for Canada.
"I feel the double is physically very good, but they just don't have the technical and tactical experience. The racing here has been fantastic for them," explained coach Terry Paul.
Jordan, Ontario's Erin Snelgrove was sixth in today's semi in 8:18.05, and she now goes to the B final of the lightweight women’s single.
The Canadian lightweight men's double crew - Dylan Harris of Ottawa and Alex Walker of Jasper, AB - was first in the C final in 6:40.13, to finish 13th overall.
The lightweight men's single (Matt Christie of Kingston, ON) finished fifth in the C final in 7:24.59 for an overall ranking of 17th.
Although conditions on the water were very good for racing, with temperatures reaching the upper 30s Celsius, racing was delayed one hour to avoid the heat.
