LINZ, Austria – The U.S. women’s quadruple sculls crew and lightweight men’s single sculler Andrew Campbell won their heats on the opening day of competition at the 2013 World Rowing Under 23 Championships in Linz, Austria. Also highlighting Wednesday’s program, men’s single sculler Lenny Futterman qualified for the quarterfinals in his event.
The regatta, which takes place July 24-28, brings together the world’s top rowers under the age of 23 to race in 21 boat classes.
The U.S. women’s quadruple sculls crew of Molly Bruggeman (Dayton, Ohio), Britta Syverson (Minneapolis, Minn.), Molly Hamrick (Tampa, Fla.) and Agatha Nowinski (Sacramento, Calif.) won its heat by 2.75 seconds over Germany to advance directly to Sunday’s final. Syverson and Nowinski return from 2012 under 23 quad that finished 10th, while Bruggeman was in the 2012 under 23 four that finished in sixth place. Hamrick joins the crew with three junior world championships medals under her belt.
In the lightweight men’s single sculls, Campbell (New Canaan, Conn.) clocked the fastest heat win, in a field of 27 scullers. He is now scheduled to race in Friday’s quarterfinal. Campbell led from the start and finished in 7:10.48, 2.47 seconds ahead of second-place Turkey. The six-time U.S. national team member has medaled in the single at the junior, under 23 and senior levels – most recently at the 2012 World Rowing Senior and Junior Championships, where he won bronze.
In the men’s single sculls, Futterman (New York, N.Y.) edged out Australia by 0.11 seconds for the fourth-place spot in Friday’s quarterfinals. Futterman, a member of the 2011 U.S. Under 23 team, clocked a 7:16.18 at the line.
Six other U.S. crews did not advance from the heats, and will have a second opportunity in Thursday’s repechages.
The men’s four of Will Gillis (Seattle, Wash.), Kaess Smit (St. Louis, Mo.), Morgan Gerlak (Baltimore, Md.) and Edward Benning (Weston, Mass.) finished third and will now race Great Britain, Australia and Lithuania in the rep. The top two crews advance to the A final.
The U.S. women’s four of Samantha Warren (Davis, Calif.), Bryna Oleshansky (Knoxville, Tenn.), Kim Szokol (Chicago, Ill.) and Katherine Ashton (Austin, Texas) finished fourth and will have a second chance at the final on Thursday when they race Italy, Poland, Ireland and France, with the top two crews advancing to the A final.
Kristina Wagner (Weston, Mass.) and Elizabeth Fitzhenry (Saratoga, N.Y.) finished fourth in the women’s pair and will race in Thursday’s rep against Russia, Australia, Ukraine and Italy.
The lightweight women’s quadruple sculls crew of Kayla McNeill (Mount Claire, N.J.), Jenna Hebert (Pittsburgh, Pa.), Veronique Bourassa (Mount Laurel, N.J.) and Jamie Roloff (Richboro, Pa.) finished fourth in its heat, and will now race in Thursday’s repechage. The U.S. will take on Russia, Italy, Australia and Denmark, with the top four crews advancing to the final.
The men’s four with coxswain of John Gould (Litchfield, Conn.), Michael Davidson (Southport, Conn.), Mark Tubergen (Angola, Ind.), Mike Slopsema (Holt, Mich.) and Charles Anderson (Upper Darby, Pa.) also finished fourth in its heat. The crew is scheduled to race Great Britain, Germany, Canada and Ukraine in the rep, with the top two crews advancing to the A final.
The lightweight men’s pair of Jordan Volpe (Naples, Italy) and Will Robins (Chappaqua, N.Y.) finished fifth in the heat, but will have another shot at the semifinals when they take on Croatia, Switzerland, Belarus, Australia and Russia for a top-three finish in the rep.
Ten U.S. crews will race in heats on Thursday including the defending under 23 champion men’s and women’s eights, women’s single sculls, lightweight women’s single sculls, men’s pair, men’s and women’s double sculls, lightweight men’s and women’s double sculls and lightweight men’s four.
In addition, the lightweight men’s quadruple sculls will compete in a preliminary race for lanes.
