The World Rowing Under 23 Championships (July 17 to 20) began in Brandenburg, Germany, with three Canadian crews taking to the water today.
The Canadian Under 23 men's eight - fresh off a win at British Henley - was second to the U.S. in its heat.
This year's U23 eight is Anthony Jacob of Vancouver, B.C, Conlin McCabe of Brockville, Ont., Will Dean of Kelowna, B.C., Blake Pucsek of Victoria B.C., Chris Aylard of Victoria, B.C., Will Crothers of Kingston, Ont., Stephen Connolly of Calgary, Alta., Rob Gibson of Kingston, Ont. and Ronan Sabo-Walsh (cox) of Vancouver, B.C.
"We established ourselves well in the first 500 of the (2000-metre) race, getting the nerves out and testing our speed against the field. The Americans had a great move in the second 500 and pushed ahead of us," said Aylard, who has competed in this event since 2005. "Although we called the race right to the finish, we did not see the same kind of finishing speed we had at Henley. .... Everyone is excited to race again on Saturday (in the semi-finals), and looking forward to racing the U.S. again on Sunday."
The Americans (5:53.44), Canadians (5:56.69) and Estonians in 5:58.92 all advanced to the semi-finals from this heat.
In the men's pair, Josh Morris of Victoria, B.C. and Gordon Clark of Vancouver, B.C. were second in their heat in 7:14.91, and will row in the rep.
The Canadian women's pair was third in its heat in 7:58.10 - Caitlin Pauls of St. Catharines, Ont. and Samantha Smith of Victoria now go to the repechage.
Canada also has a women's eight - a boat that will begin its regatta in a race for lanes tomorrow.
