Racing at the 2010 USRowing Club National Championships continued Thursday on Melton Hill Lake in Oak Ridge, Tenn. Finals are set with the completion of semifinals in the women's open single sculls dash, women's junior B single sculls, women's intermediate quadruple sculls, lightweight men's intermediate four and the women's junior A eight.
Community Rowing brought the largest team to the regatta with 88 entries, followed by Penn A.C. Rowing Association with 74. Community dominated Thursday - advancing 14 boats, seven of which took first place.
In the women's junior A four, Community qualified four boats to the semifinal including three that won their individual heats. "It was really amazing," said Emily Brazilian, a Community coxswain. "This is the second time we've rowed this line up, but we just went in and did it. It was really close, but in the end we won."
In the men's junior A single sculls, the top two scullers in six heats advanced to Friday's semifinals. Kansas-native Dustin Luebbe, rowing unaffiliated, won the sixth heat with open water in an 8:08.20, followed by Saugatuck Rowing Club's Max Malec in an 8:17.90. "It felt like another practice; I just got off the line fast and stayed ahead," said Luebbe. At the 2009 USRowing Club National Championships, Luebbe won the men's open single sculls dash. This year, he is also scheduled to race in the men's senior double sculls with John Swinford.
Vesper Boat Club won the first heat of the men's intermediate eight, with the top four boats from three heats advancing to the semifinals. Vesper won its race by 1.76 seconds in a 6:13.55, followed by Penn A. C. Third to cross the line was the USRowing Junior Men's Development Camp in a 6:16.20, with Thompson Boat Center in a 6:32.61.
