Day two at the 2012 World Rowing Under 23 Championships in Trakai, Lithuania, saw 12 events being contested with Canada in five.
Up and comer Carling Zeeman (Ontario) was second in her heat today and advances to the semi-finals of the U23 women's single. Germany's Julia Lier won the heat in 7:49.28, followed by Zeeman in 7:52.55. Poland (7:55.84), Latvia (7:57.90) and the Czech sculler (8:09.49) followed.
"My race was really good," Zeeman said of her first international test. "It was such a good feeling to race for Canada and am happy with the result. It is a different level than university and was my first taste of international racing. I really want to step it up even more in the semi."
The under-23 lightweight men's double of Dylan Harris and Mark Henry, both Ontario-based, was also second to advance to the semis. Poland commanded the race, finishing in 6:35.71, and Canada crossed the line in 6:43.85 - the Netherlands, South Africa and the Ukraine rounded out the field in this race.
Canada's young lightweight men's four of Marc Addison (BC), Evan Cheng (BC), Maxwell Lattimer (BC) and Graham Schenck (ON) were fourth in 6:22.05 and will go to the rep.
Elizabeth Fenje (BC) and Erin Snelgrove (Ontario), rowing in the U23 lightweight women's double, were fourth (7:25.79) and must go to the rep. The Netherlands won the heat in 7:18.46.
The lightweight women's single of Katherine Enns (BC) was also fourth in 8:19.54. She will row in a rep to attempt to move forward in this event.
Yesterday, the men's and women's U23 fours advanced.
Conditions are reported to be ideal for rowing - calm with a touch of rain that did not affect the racing program.
