Finals in 12 events were contested Wednesday at the 2007 Under 23 World Championships Trials on Lake Mercer in West Windsor, N.J.
After failing to meet the required time standard during the trials, the winning crews will have a final opportunity to earn the right to represent the United States at the 2007 World Rowing Under 23 Championships at tomorrow's time trial.
In the men's single sculls, women's single sculls, men's double sculls, lightweight men's single sculls and lightweight women's single sculls, finals were contested in a best two-out-of-three format.
New York Athletic Club's James Dietz won the second final of the men's single sculls in a 7:36.29. Racing unaffiliated, Peter Van Vliet crossed the line in a 7:40.73 to finish second, followed by Detroit Boat Club's Stephen Lambers in a 7:51.26.
In the second final of the women's single sculls, Michelle King, racing unaffiliated, finished 9.42 seconds ahead of Bay Area Rowing Club of Houston's Helen Tompkins. King clocked an 8:28.72 for the win, with Tompkins finishing second in an 8:38.14.
Racing unopposed in the second final of the men's double sculls, Carl Thunman and Michael Stack of Potomac Boat Club clocked a 7:05.68. The Maritime Rowing Club entry of Nate Kelly and Brendan McEwan did not race.
GMS Rowing Center's Brian de Regt took first in the second final of the lightweight men's single sculls in an 8:00.12. Teammate Mike Orzolek crossed the line in second with a time of 8:01.32. Peter Smith of the U23 Lightweight Men's Development Camp finished third in an 8:08.19.
Nicole Nelson of Undine Barge Club won the second final of the lightweight women's single sculls in an 8:30.73, followed by GMS Rowing Center's Victoria Burke in an 8:32.84. Potomac Boat Club's Katherine Bucien finished 1.22 seconds later in third place.
The lightweight men's double sculls, lightweight women's double sculls, men's pair, lightweight men's pair, women's pair, lightweight men's quadruple sculls and men's four with coxswain events were uncontested. The crews in each of these boat classes rowed down the course to officially win the event.
In the lightweight men's double sculls, James Donovan and Todd Mickelson of the U23 Lightweight Men's Development Camp finished in a 7:08.68. In the women's double sculls, the USRowing Development Camp-Pocock entry of Jill Austin and Kristen Hedstrom clocked a time of 8:20.78.
David Naughton and Derek Rasmussen of Caspersen Training Center finished in a 7:18.44 in the final of the men's pair. In the lightweight men's pair, Tim Francis and Dan Armitage of the U23 Lightweight Men's Development Camp finished in a 7:25.87. The U23 Women's Development Camp entry of Jenny Cromwell and Taryn O'Connell clocked a time of 7:48.35 in the final of the women's pair.
In the lightweight men's quadruple sculls, the U23 Lightweight Men's Development Camp boat of Chris Klotzbach, Chris Lambert, Matt Carey and Richard Klein finished in a 6:35.42. The Vesper Boat Club entry of Josh Richardson, Spencer Hunsberger, Bradley Werntz, Steve Full and Rory Roberts finished with a time of 6:35.14 in the men's four with coxswain final.
In addition to the 12 winners from Wednesday's trials, camp-selected boats in the men's eight, women's eight, men's quadruple sculls and lightweight men's four will try to meet their time standards. The time trial will begin at 7:30 a.m.
