Between the 1960 Olympics in Rome and the 2008 Games in Beijing, Stanford men's rowing teams placed 8 men on one or more Olympic teams. During this 48 year period, they accounted for 13 Olympic appearances in 6 Olympic Games and won 7 Olympic medals, including 3 gold, 1 silver and 3 bronze. They also made 13 World Championship appearances during the same period, claiming 5 more gold medals. Today these men range in age from 72 to 26, are in top rowing shape, and will race together for the first time as Stanford's Alumni entry at 8:00 a.m. at the Intercollegiate Rowing Association regatta June 6th on Lake Natoma in Sacramento.
Stanford's Olympians include Dick Draeger, 1960 bronze medalist in Rome; Ed Ferry, 1964 gold medalist in Tokyo; Dick Lyon, 1964 bronze medalist in Tokyo and Munich Olympian; coxswain Kent Mitchell, 1960 bronze medalist in Rome and 1964 gold medalist in Tokyo; Larry Hough, 1968 silver medalist in Mexico City and Munich Olympian; Adam Kreek, Athens finalist and 2008 gold medalist in Beijing; Jamie Schroeder, Athens Olympian and Beijing finalist; David Banks, a Beijian Olympian now competiting for the US at the World Cup in Barcelona; and Greg Klingsporn, a member of the US Lightweight team in the 1990's, completing the National Team complexion of Stanford's Alumni line-up.
Post-Stanford professional careers for these men include PG&E and engineering executives, home builder and construction management, venture capital and former CEO of Sallie Mae student loan organization, law practices, geology and environmental entrepreneurship, and medical training and post-doctoral research activities. Graduate degrees include PhD, MBAs, masters degrees, and JDs in law.
Not only is this the first time these Cardinals will race together, it is the first time several of them will meet. All of them see this as an opportunity not to miss, especially the 1960's Olympians for whom another 48 year wait is not in the "Cards".
