WEST WINDSOR, N.J. - Three crews secured spots on the 2007 Junior National Team on Friday by sweeping the best two-out-of-three finals and making the time standard at the 2007 Junior National Team Trials on Lake Mercer in West Windsor, N.J. Suzanne Maddamma, James Hills, Erin Crawford and Taylor Fries now will represent the U.S. at the 2007 World Rowing Junior Championships this August in Beijing, China.
In the junior women's single sculls, Steel City Rowing Club's Suzanne Maddamma captured first with a time of 8:08.57. Maddamma, who met the time standard yesterday while winning the first final, secured her spot on the junior national team by winning today's second final. HB Rowing's Kathryn Schiro took second with an 8:27.48.
Racing unaffiliated, James Hills met the time standard yesterday and took first in the junior men's single sculls event, qualifying him for the junior national team. Hills clocked a time of 7:11.31, followed by Unaffiliated Brandon Taaffe in second with a 7:38.50. Brunswick School's Ryan Potocki finished third in a 7:55.72.
GMS Rowing Center's Erin Crawford and Taylor Fries won the second final of the junior women's double sculls with a time of 7:33.93. The duo made the time standard yesterday. Narragansett Boat Club finished in second with a 7:46.28, followed by Fairmount Rowing Association in third with a 7:59.56.
Steel City Rowing Club's junior men's double sculls, GMS Rowing Center's junior women's quadruple sculls and Austinburg Boat Club's junior men's quadruple sculls also completed sweeps of the best two-out-of-three finals. However, the crews did not meet the required time standards. They will have an additional opportunity to meet the standard on Saturday.
Racing unopposed in the junior men's double, Steel City Rowing Club's Tom Charley and Keith Pfirrman finished in a 7:00.75.
The GMS Rowing Center crew of Chris Erhnart, Kayla Trnka, Kelsey Reelick and Kim Hopewell took first in the junior women's quadruple sculls with a time of 7:15.48. GMS boats also finished second and third.
In the junior men's quadruple sculls, Austinburg Boat Club's Ben Ludlow, Greg Magarian, Jason Koch and Kynan Reelick captured first with a 6:15.04, followed by GMS Rowing Center in second with a time of 6:43.88.
