Six U.S. crews raced on Sunday during the final day of competition at the 2009 Rowing World Cup Regatta in Banyoles, Spain.
In the women's single sculls, Brett Sickler (Los Gatos, Calif.) missed a spot on the medal stand by 0.15 seconds. Sickler sat in second place through the 1,500-meter mark but was unable to hold off Sweden's Frida Svensson and Spain's Nuria Dominguez at the finish line. Great Britain's Katherine Grainger led the race from start to finish, clocking a 7:56.40. Svensson captured the silver medal in a 7:59.69, with Dominguez crossing in a 7:59.89. Sickler finished with a time of 8:00.04.
The U.S. men's double sculls tandem of Glenn Ochal (Philadelphia, Pa.) and Sam Stitt (McLean, Va.) finished fifth in Sunday's final. Ochal and Stitt sat in sixth place through the 1,500-meter mark before passing France's Adrien Hardy and Jean-Baptiste Macquet in the final quarter of the race. Great Britain's Stephen Rowbotham and Matthew Wells edged France's Cedric Berrest and Julien Bahain at the line to win the gold medal with a time of 6:23.98. Berrest and Bahain finished just 0.06 seconds behind. Croatia's Valent Sinkovic and Martin Sinkovic clocked a 6:24.43 to win the bronze medal over countrymen Damir Martin and David Sain, who finished in a 6:29.00. Ochal and Stitt stroked a 6:33.26.
The men's pair of Charlie Cole (New Canaan, Conn.) and David Banks (Potomac, Md.) won the B final to finish seventh overall. Cole and Banks got off the line in second place before taking the lead in the second quarter of the race. The duo easily walked away from the rest of the field over the final 1,000 meters to record the victory. Cole and Banks finished with a time of 6:41.66, while the Czech Republic's Vaclav Chalupa Jr. and Jakub Makovicka finished second in a 6:49.19.
Racing in the B final of the men's single sculls, Warren Anderson (Paso Robles, Calif.) finished third for a ninth-place finish overall. Anderson settled into third place during the second quarter of the race and maintained his position through the finish line, crossing with a time of 7:13.44. Olympic silver medalist Ondrej Synek from the Czech Republic won the B final with a time of 7:05.53, while Slovenia's veteran sculler Iztok Cop finished second in a 7:09.55.
Michelle Trannel (East Dubuque, Ill.) and Abby Broughton (Tetonia, Idaho) also finished third (ninth overall) in the B final of the lightweight women's double sculls, clocking a 7:32.37. The duo sat in third place at each of the 500-meter splits. The Netherlands' Maaike Head and Rianne Sigmond won the race in a 7:25.68, while Poland's Ilona Mokronowska and Weronika Deresz finished second in a 7:27.92.
In the lightweight men's double sculls, Andy Quinn (Honeoye Falls, N.Y.) and Shane Madden (Ambler, Pa.) finished fourth in the B final for a 10th-place finish overall. The duo entered the final 500 meters in second place behind The Netherlands' Paul Drewes and Jaap Schouten but was unable to hold off a hard-charging Portugal and Greece in the final 500 meters. Drewes and Schouten won the race with a time of 6:41.05. Portugal's Nuno Mendes and Pedro Fraga came from fifth place at the 1,500-meter mark to finish second in a 6:42.40, while Greece's Dimitrios Mougios and Ilias Pappas placed third in a 6:42.77. Quinn and Madden clocked a 6:44.66 to hold off Cuba for fourth place by 0.02 seconds.
The Rowing World Cup series was launched in 1997 and includes all 14 Olympic boat classes. The overall Rowing World Cup champions are determined after a series of three regattas. The remaining stages of the series will be held June 19-21 in Munich, Germany, and July 10-12 in Lucerne, Switzerland.
