The field of women's single scullers racing foor the opportunity to earn on a spot on the 2015 U.S. Team at National Selection Regatta 2 was narrowed down to six competitors Wednesday morning on Mercer Lake in West Windsor, N.J.
Leading the way with the fastest time of the two semifinals in 7:42.65 was USRowing Training Center - Princeton's Emily Huelskamp (Sainte Genevieve, Mo.), followed in second in 7:54.79 by USTC -" Princeton's Kelly Pierce (Oakton, Va.). Advancing in third in 7:57.42 was Y Quad Cities Rowing's Elizabeth Sharis (Bettendorf, Iowa).
"It was fun, much better than last night," said Huelskamp. "It was fun to be able to just put the blades in and go and not have to worry much about conditions. I think it will be a good race tomorrow. I'm just trying to get more experience and give it my best go and put it out there."
Advancing first from the second semifinal in 7:43.10 was 2012 Olympian and two-time national team sculler Gevvie Stone (Newton, Mass.). Crossing second in 7:50.05 was Craftsbury Sculling Center's Margaret Fellows (Craftsbury, Vt.), followed in third in 7:50.45 by Craftsbury's Elizabeth Sonshine (Craftsbury, Vt.).
"It feels great to be back on the course racing 2,000 meters," said Stone. "The conditions were great today. It was just fun to be out there."
Also being contested at NSR 2 is the men's single sculls, lightweight men's double sculls and men's quadruple sculls. The winner of each of the four events will be able to row at either of the remaining world cup races and earn a nomination to the U.S. team with a top-seven finish.
If named to the team, crews would race at the 2015 World Rowing Championships in Aiguebelette, France, with hopes of qualifying the boat for the 2016 Olympic Games.
Racing will resume Thursday morning at 7:30 a.m., with finals for all events. Finals will be live-streamed on USRowing's YouTube Channel. For complete results, click here.
