Three years ago, Andreww Campbell, Jr. teamed up with Will Daly in an effort to make the 2012 U.S. Olympic Team.
Campbell (New Canaan, Conn.) and Daly (Vail, Colo.) won at trials, but not at the last-chance qualification regatta, and their Olympic bid dissolved.
Campbell went back to rowing the lightweight men's single. He won a bronze medal at senior worlds in 2012, won back-to-back under 23 titles in 2013 and 2014, missed the finals at the senior 2013 worlds, and then clipped a buoy at the 2014 World Rowing Championships in Amsterdam, The Netherlands and flipped into the water. He climbed back in his boat, completed the race and then finished 13th overall.
Tuesday night, Campbell began another Olympic pursuit, competing in the lightweight men's double sculls as an entry from the Cambridge Boat Club with Joshua Konieczny (Millbury, Ohio) at the 2015 USRowing National Selection Regatta 2 on Mercer Lake in West Windsor, N.J.
Also competing in the event is the Cambridge entry of Austin Meyer (Cohoes, N.Y.) and Colin Ethridge (Laytonsville, Md.) and an entry from Malta Boat Club of Matt O'Leary (Westwood, Mass.) and Hugh McAdam (Grantham, N.H.).
"I certainly feel like the last two years have been leading up to this, that this has all been part a bigger process of going for the Olympics," Campbell said. "I felt it was definitely time to get in the double, and I'm so happy to be in the double. It's a nice change of pace. Working with Josh has been great, and we've been rowing together a lot since the fall. It's good that we're organized and had the time to come together."
Konieczny and Campbell rowed the fastest time of the lightweight double time trial, with a 6:00.45. All three crews advance to the Thursday final.
Also being contested at NSR 2 is the men's and women's single sculls, and men's quadruple sculls. The winners of each of the four events will earn the right to row at either of the remaining world cup races and earn a nomination to the U.S. team with a top-seven finish.
If named to the team, crews would race at the 2015 World Rowing Championships in Aiguebelette, France, with hopes of qualifying the boat for the 2016 Olympic Games.
Of the seven entries in the men's single, six advanced to the final.
Among the competitors is Community Rowing Inc.'s Lucas Wilhelm (Miranda, Calif.), who finished sixth in the eight at the 2013 World University Games, Craftsbury Sculling Center's William Cowles (Farmington, Conn.), who won the men's single speed order event at NSR 1 and finished eighth in the quadruple sculls at the 2013 Samsung World Rowing Cup III, and Potomac Boat Club's Lenny Futterman (New York, N.Y.), who finished 21st in the men's single sculls at the 2013 World Rowing Under 23 Championships.
Only one athlete, Willamette Rowing Club's Dominic Wilmes (Canby, Oregon) was eliminated. Cowles posted the fastest time with a 6:50.50.
Competing in the women's single sculls are eight athletes including Cambridge Boat Club's 2012 Olympian and two-time senior national team single sculler Gevvie Stone (Newton, Mass.) and two USRowing National Team Training Center - Princeton scullers in Kelly Pierce (Oakton, Va.) and Emily Huelskamp (Sainte Genevieve, Mo.). Also competing in the event is Y Quad Cities Rowing's Elizabeth Sharis (Bettendorf, Iowa), a three-time junior national team member who finished 10th at the 2014 World Rowing Junior Championships.
All eight women advanced to Wednesday's semifinal. Stone posted the fastest time with a 7:25.34.
In the men's quadruple sculls event, two crews have entered competition. Representing California Rowing Club is the crew of Hans Struzyna (Seattle, Wash.), John Madura (West Milford, N.J.), Ryan Shelton (Wrightwood, Calif.) and Paul Marcy (Guilford, Vermont). Struzyna and Shelton finished 13th in the event at the 2013 World Rowing Championships, and Madura represented the U.S. in the double sculls at the 2012 World Rowing Under 23 Championships.
Also entered in the event is Craftsbury Sculling Center's Benjamin Dann (Pound Ridge, N.J.), John Graves (Cincinnati, Ohio), London Olympian Peter Graves (Cincinnati, Ohio) and Thomas Graves (Cincinnati, Ohio).
