Seventy high school rowing teams from four states will compete in the Philadelphia Scholastic Rowing Association's (PSRA) annual "City Championships" on Sunday, May 5 on the Schuylkill River in Philadelphia.
Approximately 2,500 boys and girls representing high schools from Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware and New York are expected to compete in the one-day event which also serves as a qualifier for the Scholastic Rowing Association of American Regatta May 24 and 25 and the USRowing National Youth Championships in June.
The May 5 Championship regatta concludes a series of six regattas sponsored this spring by the PSRA on the Schuylkill River, including the five Flick-Horvat Regattas that ran on Sundays from March 17 through April 21. The final Flick regatta on April 21 included 587 entries from 86 high schools and was bigger than last year's Dad Vail Regatta.
This year, the PSRA is happy to welcome Cooper Bone and Joint Institute of Cherry Hill, NJ and Mariner Insurance as sponsors of the2013 City Championships.
Racing begins with time trials at 8 a.m. Finals begin in the afternoon for 48 different events.
The City Championship began with a handful of local boys' schools in the 1970s and has grown into one of the largest high school rowing competitions in the country. "The City Championship is the penultimate event of the season for the PSRA," said Leslie Pfeil, PSRA president. "Not only are gold, silver and bronze medals awarded in all events that day, but we also award points trophies to the boys' and girls' teams that have accumulated the most points during our series of the five Flick regattas. It's a truecelebration of high school rowing."
