The men's and women's rowing teams at Cal, Washington and Stanford are leaving the boats in the racks for the next two weeks in solidarity with rowers in the northeastern US who are off the water after heavy rains and epic flooding have put rowable water out of reach on the cusp of racing season.
"We felt it was the gentlemanly thing to do," said Stanford's Craig Amerkhanian. "We have an intense rivalry between the coasts, but that shouldn't stop us from a sporting gesture when given an opportunity to do so." Mike Callahan at the University of Washington echoed Amerkhanian's sentiments, adding that "a few extra reps in the weight room never hurt anybody. We got enough water time in last summer anyway."
Even coaches at Cal-Berkeley have enthusiastically gone back indoors (if they ever were indoors) for two unscheduled weeks of winter training. "I think it's great," said Cal's Mike Teti. "Heck, there are parts of our boathouse I haven't even seen yet!"
Wisconsin's Chris Clark could not be reached for comment; Wisconsin has seen an unusually mild winter this year, and rumors are flying that UW has been doing double sessions in the boats on Lake Mendota since January 12th. Wisco arguably gets a bye this year since they didn't get on the water until tax day last spring.
