Not to diminish what UW did on Thames in their fixture against Oxford; it was an impressive showing. Nevertheless, there needs to be a clarification regarding their "making history." Actually, the genesis for this email is pretty funny: I was getting a towel in Newell and above the towels sits a framed photograph of two eights racing on the Thames. Now we know that Harvard, in fours, was the first to race on the Boat Race course against Oxford in 1869. However, Harvard was also the first to race in eights as well. The race took place on September 8, 1906 and Cambridge beat Harvard by 6 seconds: 19m 18s.; 19m. 24s.
