New Oarlocks: Magik MK-1 Scull & Sweep Locks
The new Magik MK-1 Scull & Sweep rowing oarlocks, distributed in the US by Durham Boat Company, have positive locking and shock absorbing mechanism that helps provide a true square and feather on each stroke. As of September 26th scull locks come with bands of three tensions. They are especially good at the start to minimize the chance of a crab. In Durham's experience, they have found MK-1 locks to work just as well on the new SRS black sleeves as on the older style STS white sleeves.
Results from the World Rowing Championships help in Japan: New Zealand M2- won a Gold medal using MK-1 locks as did the Australian M2+. Czech sculler, Ondrej Synek, also won a bronze medal with MK-1 scull locks. All sculling locks are now sold with 3 tension bands to handle the any stiffness desired.
Blade Improvement: Dreher Apex-REX: new product enhancement
The new Apex-REX has a flat edge at the tip of the blade, which should ease water flow around the end of the blade. This blade type can be made from existing Apex-R or RX blades, so that you do not have to purchase a new set of sculls. If you want to have Durham do the modification on existing sculls or order this new design, please contact them.
Durham is only offering the design change on new Apex-RX sculls at the present time. Their Club Racing Team has been testing and racing with them all summer. For the correct rowing style, this change appears to be beneficial. Durham will soon be putting a procedure on the web site for you to make your own modifications.
