Anyone who feels compelled to come and share something about Bill or to hear and see what others share is welcome to celebrate with us.
Friends, Alums, and Team Members of the Michigan Men's Rowing Team,
It is with a heavy heart and great sadness that I inform you of the death of a member of the Michigan Rowing Family. Bill Schnittman '10, died from a gun-shot wound inflicted on him Friday, December 21st, 2012. Bill was the victim of a horrific domestic quarrel that escalated and turned into a murder-suicide after the perpetrator later committed suicide during a car chase. Bill was 25, and living in Oklahoma City, where the murder-suicide took place.
Bill was a four-year oarsman for Michigan from 2006-2010. He served as a team officer for two years as our team secretary his junior and senior years, leading an overhaul of how our team apparel was structured. He was also active in helping to maintain the equipment during this time. He was consumed with rowing, it is fair to say, and completely dedicated himself to it. Michigan Crew was his passion while in college. He pulled the 4th best Freshman 2K ever his freshman year, and Bill was the 5-seat in one of the fastest varsity eights I have coached here - the 2009 Varsity eight that won the Dad Vail convincingly and ACRA in the most impressive fashion it has been done. He had moved to Oklahoma City after graduation to train there with national team aspirations. I was extremely proud to have coached him, and his unique personality always kept coaches and teammates on their toes. Anyone who coached or rowed with Bill has many, many stories to tell about him.
Bill is survived by his parents, Arthur and Virginia, and his identical twin brother Bob. He leaves behind scores of former teammates who I know will join me in mourning. Sorry to deliver such awful news at a time of the year people try to come together and celebrate. When I know more details of services for Bill I will be sure to pass them along. In this day and age news travels fast and I am sure many have heard this already, but I will also be sharing it on our website, Facebook, and other sources.
In Great Sadness,
Gregg Hartsuff
Head Coach
University of Michigan Men's Rowing
