More than 200 of Canada's top rowers are set to compete this weekend (Nov. 9 to 11) in Victoria, B.C. at the 2012 RBC National Rowing Championships.
"This will be the first step as we build toward the 2015 Toronto Pan Am Games and the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio," said Peter Cookson, Rowing Canada Aviron High Performance Director. "I'm looking forward to seeing the depth of talent from across the country - there should be some exciting racing this weekend."
Although many of the 2012 Olympians are either moving on or taking a break from competition, this regatta will include those who are beginning to pave a road to the world stage and ultimately to the Pan Am Games and the Olympics.
This year, the host club is Victoria City Rowing Club (http://www.vcrc.bc.ca). Racing begins at 8 am Friday on Elk Lake, with the finals taking place on Sunday morning. Medal ceremonies begin around 12:30 on Nov. 11.
As previously announced, the National Rowing Championships (NRC) podium finishers will receive a share of a $20,000 purse. The prize money is distributed to the medal winners in the senior categories. The NRC is a small boat regatta (singles, pairs) held each November.
The purse comes from a private donation, and goes directly to the top-performing athletes. The title sponsor is RBC - Royal Bank (Victoria area branches).
