The buoys are in, Magazine beach is packed with shells, and Saturday's racing crews did their six miles on the course last night.
An alum boat rowing in the club eight and a masters crew with a couple folks from the same school (including the coxswain) had a little brush last night. The two crews were about a length apart and went into a 20 at about the same time, blasting down a narrow stretch of river together. The two coxswains held their water, with the blades just a few feet apart, very well done. Hard to say if there was a winner, per se, but the geezer eight wasn't complaining. "Feels just like the inlet!" the geezer cox yelled across after the 20. Those memories die hard, if they die at all.
Cyrus Beasley was seen powering away from other singles and eights alike on his trip down the river last night. Later that night at the bar, asked if he was in the masters single, he replied "I'm in the champ single; I figure I'll stick with the champ event until I really get my ass kicked." The way he was powering away from that eight last night, it's likely he'll be racing champ again next year, at least.
A no-show in a reunion eight sent the crew's organizers into full rolodex mode last night - "What side does he row? How old is he? Where does he live? Seattle?"
Warmup of the weekend: we saw a Delaware women's eight yesterday sitting cross-legged, eight in a row, with their hands on the shoulders of the person sitting in front of them, all eight swinging back and forth in time as if rowing.
Argument of the day: what is race cadence?
Aquil is turning into a media savant; a few weeks ago it was Kung Fu, this week it's a Fatburger hat.
It's not just geezers and club guys today; the day ends with the Champ single. Good luck to everyone!
