After a rainy Boston morning, most rowers have only a handful of numbers on their minds to measure ever-crucial details like coffee consumption, minutes of steady state, and the most unforgettable number of all: their HOCR bow.

Here in the HOCR Office, the number on our mind is 8 (HOCR countdown) but here are some other measurements of interest as the 47th edition of the event gets underway:

  • 300,000: Spectators anticipated throughout the weekend
  • 88,420: Distance, in feet, if all of the oars in the Regatta lined up blade-to-handle
  • 82,245: Distance, in feet, if all racing shells lined up bow to stern
  • 8,868: Number of athletes competing
  • 29,650: Amount, in dollars, raised for charity
  • 28,000: Amount of tape, in inches, pasted to the bibs that attach to the stern deck of boats
  • 4,857: Facebook followers
  • 1,953: Boats rowing (increase of 36 boats over 2010)
  • 1,400: Volunteers helping (approximately)
  • 1,382 Folding chairs
  • 389: First-place medals awards throughout Regatta weekend
  • 200: Number of international entries (10% of all entries)
  • 138: Number of porta-potties installed along the Charles River for race weekend
  • 100: Number of boat trailers parked at FALS
  • 84: Age of oldest known rower (Mary Elizabeth Stone of Berkeley Paddle and Rowing Club in Event 33 Senior-Veteran Women’s Single on Sunday at 8:59 AM)
  • 45/55: Gender split (45% women & 55% men)
  • 34: States represented
  • 33: Percentage of entries turned away
  • 19: Countries represented
  • 14: Age of youngest known rower (William Bass of Greenwich Crew in Directors’ Challenge Parent/Child Double on Saturday at 4:27 PM)
  • 13:58.9: Fastest course time (1997 Championship Eights – Men, USRowing )
  • 7: Bridges
  • 3: Number of full time employees on the HOCR staff
  • 3: Length of miles of race course, all upstream
  • 1: Bloodhound named Buckley

With 8 oars or 2, with 6 blisters or one sore rib, or with 68 degree weather or 0.1 inches of snow, we look forward to seeing everyone at the 47th Head Of The Charles Regatta!
