Day one at the 2013 Dad Vail regatta has wrapped up. A very long day of racing left some crews anxious for their semis, some elated to have made their finals, and as it happens, there were the disappointed crews who were knocked out early—but will be ready to avenge next year. From calm water to cool concessions, here’s your Top 10 Sights at Dad Vail Day One:
1. Ergs may not float—but Mini Cooper’s do!
2. Many crews racing twice; battling for the few coveted spots in the finals.
3. Froyo truck and umbrella hats to stay cool (and look cooler).
4. Grandstands packed with athletes, parents, and grandparents; nailbiting, cheering and gasping galore.
5. The big people napping and the littler people pacing between heats and semis.
6. Yellow coated race officials looking toasty under the hot sun.
7. Coaches skillfully speeding down Kelly Drive—one hand on handlebar, one waving frantically at the river.
8. Athletes and coaches being interviewed by local news in the shadow of Jack Kelly.
9. Boat trailer hammocks—for coxswain or coach?
10. Tired masses packing up. It’s time to nosh and snooze in preparation for tomorrow’s races!
