Coach Trick
The Wrench Carabiner

Here is a simple hack for keeping wrenches from getting lost in the bottom of your toolbox: carabiner them together.

This hack is not for every tool, of course: it really just works with box wrenches, as you have to have a "closed" end to run the carabiner through - but it can be a great way to keep those wrenches collected together in a crowded bunch of tools. It can save a fair bit of rummaging, and you can even clip the whole bunch to your belt so you don't go home at the end of the day with the infamous single, orphaned wrench in your pocket.

We've seen carabiners do their "this stuff belongs together" trick in other ways, too;, specifically for rowing folks: collecting the rainbow of electrical tape that no boathouse should be without; clipping coxswain tools to the coxbox carry strap so the tools actually wind up in the boat; and even holding a few clipboards together on a hook in the erg room, so there are always enough nearby to collect erg scores when it is that time of year.

The great thing about having your wrenches collected on the carabiner is that it makes it simple to grab a full set of what you need without having to either hunt through the whole toolbox, or lug a full load of tools to where the boat is. Lately, I’ve taken to keeping my metric and standard wrenches on separate carabiners, so I can quickly grab a whole set of what I need to work on a specific type of boat and not find myself walking all the back to the box because I left behind one critical item.
