Full Time Director of Rowing and Head Coach

The Williamsburg Boat Club (WBC) in Williamsburg, Virginia, is seeking a leader that can guide the Club through its next level of development. WBC provides a high-quality rowing experience for the community, offering Youth and Adult recreational and competitive rowing programs to roughly 150-200 rowers. The club is dedicated to a culture for our athletes to establish bonds, build confidence and sportsmanship, and to work cohesively to achieve common goals.
The Director of Rowing and Head Coach will lead a staff of 8-10 coaches across all programs, and a boatman. The DOR is a non-voting member of the Board of Directors and reports to the President.
Qualifications:
We are seeking an experienced Coach and Administrator possessing strong leadership and communication skills, and with high motivation in continuing to build our sport and Club. Candidates should:
• Be able to educate coaches, parents, and athletes in all aspects of rowing techniques and best practices.
• Possess a minimum US Rowing Level 2 Coach certification with up-to-date SafeSport, First Aid, and boating certificates.
• Have demonstrated administrative and budget management skills
• Demonstrate ability to contribute to the vision in building the WBC Rowing Center, and support planning and construction
• Be capable of assisting with equipment maintenance, fleet management, and supervising boat trailer regatta travel
Responsibilities:
The Director of Rowing/Head Coach will have responsibility for coaching or directing all WBC rowing programs including scheduling, staffing, and planning training sessions, liaising with the parents Booster club in organizing weekend regatta travel and support, and providing leadership in the ongoing development and improvement of each program. The DOR will be able to:
• Uphold and promote the mission, culture, vision, and best practices of the club’s programs and maintain a close relationship with the club board members. Successful candidates will also have the proven ability to collaborate with both adults and children in a positive spirit and serve as a leader and positive role model.
• Plan, promote, accelerate, and grow the rowing programs into a premier rowing hub for our Region.
• Draw from a strong working knowledge of the sport of rowing to plan and facilitate effective practices, teaching rowers proper technique and building fitness, while fostering team and sportsmanship.
• Hire, mentor and provide leadership to the coaches. Provide written or oral reviews for the coaches each season.
• Comply with club and US Rowing safety policies and procedures. Help evolve safety policies to ensure they remain up-to-date.
• Represent WBC at outside rowing meetings and conferences, including EVSRA and US Rowing sponsored events.
• Oversee facilities development and maintenance, and fleet/launch planning, organization, and maintenance. Lead or supervise necessary administration and budgeting over relevant responsibility areas. Pursue revenue growth and operate within budget guidelines.
• Work with Club to market, promote and recruit athletes for the program. Advocate and support student athletes in college recruiting.
• Serve as the chair of the Racing Committee. Coordinate out-of-season and summer activities and training for adult and student-athletes to include Summer Camps and Learn to Row programs.
• Assist in developing and executing fundraising or grant programs.
Compensation and Time Off:
Pay range is $55,000-60,000 annually, commensurate with experience, with an additional bonus opportunity of up to 10%. There is future upside salary potential through establishing new programs/services (adaptive rowing, corporate team building, etc).
The position requires roughly 40 hours weekly in Fall/Spring, 30 hours in Winter/Summer - 4 weeks off between seasons and over the Winter holiday. Coaches can also take personal days off in seasons as long as responsibilities are met.
