This week's feature is with Northeastern's fifth year novice rower Nicole Bishop. Bishop started rowing following four years of volleyball at NU but is picking it up quickly thanks to a family connection to the sport.
row2k - You're a fifth year senior and novice rower from the volleyball squad. How did you find your way onto the rowing team?
Nicole Bishop - Rowing has been with me since I was a little girl. We lived near a lake in Georgia and I remember my mom going down in her single and rowing every chance she got. When I was old enough I was able to go in the training shell and I apparently have known how to row since I was 8, just not very well. We unfortunately had to move away from the lake and rowing got away from us. However, when I went to Northeastern I was asked every year why I didn't row. I remember my freshman year being recruited by the girls on the team. Now I am dating a rower on the Northeastern men's team and once I was done with volleyball I kind of just picked it up.
row2k - What do you like about the sport?
Nicole Bishop - It is the ultimate team sport. My favorite part is being out on the water and escaping everything else. I love the competitive edge as well and the girls on the team have been amazing with helping me transition into the sport.
row2k - What are some of the sports differences and similarities compared to volleyball?
Nicole Bishop - I think the sports are completely different, the only similarity would be the team aspect but even that is approached differently. For example volleyball can have one or two players that really stand out, where as for rowing the entire team needs to be one to succeed.
I think in regards to fitness the two sports are completely different. Volleyball requires short spurts of power and rowing requires constant power along with incredible cardiovascular endurance.
row2k - Tell us a little bit about your family history with the sport.
Nicole Bishop - My mom was introduced to rowing her freshman year at Syracuse University. When they asked her come out for the crew team she thought they meant sailing. The coach insisted that she come to one practice and if she didn't like it then he would leave her alone. The rest is history, the first time he put her in a boat she fell in love with it. She trained all over the country and rowed for College Boat Club and was invited to attend the National Team Rowing Camps.
I am so proud of my mom and her accomplishments. Growing up I wanted to be just like her.
row2k - What are some of your expectations for your first 2k race on the water?
Nicole Bishop - Not to catch a crab.
row2k - What are you studying at Northeastern and do you have any plans yet for after college?
Nicole Bishop - I will be graduating this May with a degree in Psychology and a minor in Education. I hope to go on to graduate school and become a Child Life Specialist.
