Rowing Hack: Human Slings
August 25, 2022
John FX Flynn

Gotta lotta boats to move before the new season starts? Have you got more bodies to help than you have boat-slings to drop shell into? Then this week's hack might just be for you: Human Slings.

Yep, this one is pretty simple: use your extra hands (or legs, or backs, or whole body) to hold the boats.

This trick is especially useful when you might not have enough actual slings for every shell that needs to come off a rack. They can hold them at "sling height" or lay down on the job--like the fellas above--to become "human low-boys." Just have your rowers do whatever it takes to keep the shell up off the ground while you figure out where it needs to go...or to do whatever "boathouse tetris" needs to happen before every shell has a rack to call home again.

Works at the race course, too, of course!

With heavier boats, or even just bigger ones like eights and fours, you can even have your "slings" get some light weightlifting in if you dare: shell curl-ups or even boat-carry squats.

Another benefit of the human sling? Well, no one will ever mistake one for a chair--and we all know how the folks who take care of the equipment feel about that--plus you never have to worry about a shell getting blown out of a human sling, which means you can skip the Boat Sling Anchor Hack, too.

Don't have a big team but still need some extra boat-setting-down devices when you run out of slings? You can always roll with the Foam Roller Slings Hack in a pinch.

Does your squad have a fun way to move boats when the need arises? If so, share your tips--and hacks--in the comments below.

If you have a great rowing hack to suggest for future inclusion, then please send it to us, and we will feature your idea in a future column.

If you enjoy and rely on row2k, we need your help to be able to keep doing all this. Though row2k sometimes looks like a big, outside-funded operation, it mainly runs on enthusiasm and grit. Help us keep it coming, thank you! Learn more.
