In Memory of Nikolay Kurmakov
@laurenlanee  · October 13, 2020
it's impossible to put into just a few words who Nikolay Kurmakov was, but "extraordinary magic" comes close. if you had the chance to know him, you discovered this almost instantly. Nik was selfless and generous. every animal was his friend. every sunrise was the most beautiful one he'd ever seen. every woman who came through Simmons or Riverside had the opportunity for greatness in Nik's eyes and he wouldn't allow you to be anything less. (thank you to those with photos and videos @simmonsucrew @simmonssharks @scullingfool @simmonsuniversity @row2k @carltremblaydotcom @usrowing @rbcwsweepz @riversideboatclub)

it's impossible to put into just a few words who Nikolay Kurmakov was, but "extraordinary magic" comes close. if you had the chance to know him, you discovered this almost instantly. Nik was selfless and generous. every animal was his friend. every sunrise was the most beautiful one he'd ever seen. every woman who came through Simmons or Riverside had the opportunity for greatness in Nik's eyes and he wouldn't allow you to be anything less. when Nik and his family first immigrated to the US, despite being an Olympic caliber coach, he struggled to find a coaching position because of his English. Ali Kantor saw the man Nikolay was and hired him under the one condition he took English lessons. but no matter how long he lived in Boston or how good his English became, Nik's every cheer, pre-race pep talk, and even his laugh was drenched with the thickest Ukranian accent that is simply unforgettable. my college career was shaped from hearing his voice cut through foggy, cold, sometimes snowy 6AM practices. it's filled with practicing race starts during our Miami spring training trips and his countdowns igniting every ounce of adrenaline we had. it's filled with his dry humored jokes, his hearty laugh, and "ladiez" with a distinct and hard "z". just like the way he made everyone feel, his voice will never be forgotten. Nikolay wasn't just a coach, a rower, a father, a husband, or a friend - Nikolay was magic. he was extraordinary magic. thank you for sharing your magic with all of us <3 (thank you to those with photos and videos @simmonsucrew @simmonssharks @scullingfool @simmonsuniversity @row2k @carltremblaydotcom @usrowing @rbcwsweepz @riversideboatclub)
