1. What inspired you to go to your first rowing practice; was there anything memorable about it?
I thought it was going to be fun to be on the river rowing. The only bad thing was that it was the middle of the winter season in McLean, VA and all we did was erg and lift weights. I remember I did 30 minutes on the erg piece the first time I got on it. I was wearing board shorts and a t-shirt.
2. Was there a practice, race or other event when you fell in love with the sport, or when you knew you might not be too bad at rowing? When you thought you could make the national team?
I was in the middle of a vacation on the beach in 2004 when I saw the 8 win the gold medal at the Athens games. That's when I thought that this was a great sport to be in. I thought I could make the national team when I first came to camp and after a month I got to race in a 2 mile piece on Carnegie Lake in a pair and didn't come in last. Matt you are awesome!!!!!
3. Best race/practice, worst race/practice?
Best race - I'm training to have it this summer
Best practice - I've been in a few boats where we had great practices, but I'm still looking for the perfect practice.
Worst race - I don't know. There has been a couple. I believe that I've learn a great amount from each, so I wouldn't call the worst races.
Worst practice - My hamstring was injured and I couldn't really get to full slide in the boat. I don't think my coach liked that too much.
4. Best/Anything you've done in the sport no one knows about?
I'm open with everything in my life...well, almost everything, haha.
5. Any/Most important advice for young rowers?
The more and better you train, the easier the race will be. All the training that you do, you will use during the race. Have fun with it.
