1. What inspired you to go to your first rowing practice; was there anything memorable about it?
The University of Michigan rowing team sent out flyers to all incoming freshmen to come to an informational meeting about the novice rowing program. The women's novice coach at the time had written an article about Michigan rowing that came with the flyer. I remember my mom reading that article and telling me that I should try-out so that I would stay in shape and probably get six pack abs. Who could turn down a six pack?
2. Was there a practice, race or other event when you fell in love with the sport, or when you knew you might not be too bad at rowing? When you thought you could make the national team?
I really enjoyed rowing my novice year, and loved it from the start. But it wasn?t until the fall of my senior year that I actually thought that I could be good at it. We took our first 6K of the year and instead of finishing at the bottom half of the team, I finished toward the top. Mark, my coach at Michigan, asked me if I had ever thought about rowing after college or the U23 team. I think my reply was, "Not until right now!"
And making the national team? It definitely became a dream of mine after making the U23 team, but it wasn't until I had actually been named to the team last summer (2007) that I thought that I would make it. I had moved to Princeton to train in the fall, but had a rough year. After a lot of hard work and help from the coaches, I started to improve and ended up on the team. I still think that it is pretty crazy how it all happened so quickly.
3. Best race/practice, worst race/practice?
I would have to say that the final at the World Cup in Lucerne was my best race because it is where we qualified for the Olympics. My worst race ever-Fall Speed Order 2007. Three crabs in one race; enough said.
4. Best/Anything you've done in the sport no one knows about?
Unfortunately, results from the 2006 Fall Speed Order were posted, so people found out that I finished 40th. I would have liked to have kept that one quiet though!
5. Any/Most important advice for young rowers?
Be coachable. It will get you a long way.
