Interesting Fact:
New Brunswick's Greg Theriault of Rothesay and Keegan Drummond of Quispamsis won the province's first medal of the Games, a silver in the men's pair this afternoon. The pair, who both attend Brock University in St. Catharines, felt the added pressure today. "It definitely added to the nerves," said Theriault. "But it worked out and it's the highlight of our rowing careers." Their Canada Games' coach is Delores Young, a former Olympic rower.
Tomorrow:
Friday rowing wraps up with more finals, including the men's eight that will be the last rowing race of the Games.
Quotes (Aug. 20):
Phil Marshall, Ontario provincial coach
"I think we surpassed our expectations. It was an unknown because the heats and reps were all close. The only thing we expected was that everyone raced to his or her own potential. So overall I'm very happy."
Emma Dirks (St. Catharines, ON) coxswain, gold in the women's eight
"It was such a rush. With the distance of 1200 metres it was technically a challenge for me - everything had to be mapped out perfectly. But we ended up with a great race plan and it came together perfectly. You just have to go as hard as you can and we came together to get the job done."
Sarah Aylard (Victoria, B.C.), gold in women's pair
"We get a bit frantic at the start and we had a bad start during the heat, so we just had to calm down. I think we must have called 'relaxed' about 50 times during the race. In the end we're really happy, we've trained a lot together but this was our first race where we really felt challenged."
Lisa Roman (Langley, B.C.), gold in women's pair
"We were able to stay strong and steady during the race. Saskatchewan (who finished second) really kept us on our toes. They were really quick off the start and stayed with us, it was great."
