Rowing and the LGBTQ Community: An Assessment for Pride Month
Rowing has seen a veritable explosion of openly LGBTQ people participating in the sport in the United States over the past several decades. Largely, this has happened quietly and gradually, as rowers and coaches have come out on their teams and clubs as part of a larger process of the gay community becoming more visible in American life. In a moment where the Black Lives Matter movement is helping us all to reflect on issues of structural access in our society, USRowing is hosting a panel discussion featuring openly LGBTQ coaches and athletes and straight friends who have been long-time active supporters of LGBTQ inclusion in rowing. Together, we will take a moment to celebrate Pride month by assessing the current state of LGBTQ inclusion in and exclusion from rowing and by discussing ways forward that every club and team can take to help make rowing a more accessible sport.
