TOKYO 2020 RECAP
France led a tightly packed group of four doubles to the 500 meter mark, just ahead of The Netherlands, China, and Great Britain. At the halfway point, China moved out to a small lead over the French and Dutch with the British still in the mix. The Netherlands stormed to the lead in the third 500, but an early sprint by the French pushed their bow ahead at the line for the gold. The Netherlands took the silver, and China the bronze.
Watch the Olympic Final here, M2x final starts around 1:23:00.
2022 SEASON RECAP
Following the Sinkovic brothers M2- win in Tokyo for Croatia, they announced they were moving back to the double for the next quadrennial, and have been nothing short of dominant in 2022, with Martin and Valent sweeping all four FISA events. Australia and Spain got the closest to the Croatians, coming within a second at World Cup III. Other fast doubles during the season were Lithuania and Serbia.
USA PROSPECTS
The USA men's double of Thomas Phifer and Sorin Koszyk won their event Senior Trials II in August to be selected to the 2022 National Team. It is the first national team for both scullers, though Koszyk raced in the men's quad last year that raced at the Final Olympic Qualification Regatta. A good result for the double would be qualification for the AB Semifinals in what is a tough event in Racice.
MEDAL PICKS
The men's double final will likely see a race off between the reigning M2- and M2x Olympic Champions. While Croatia will be the favorites, the French double of Boucheron and Androdias make their 2022 debut in the event, after racing in singles for the season, and should challenge Croatia for the gold. Behind them, the race for bronze will likely come down to Australia and Spain.
GOLD – CROATIA
SILVER – FRANCE
BRONZE - AUSTRALIA
