To start this blog out I would like to provide a brief introduction into me and my pair partner so you aren’t just reading a piece from a random rower. I am rowing the lightweight pair with fellow Riverside Boat Club member Alex Rothmeier. Alex graduated from Yale in 2008, and I graduated from Oregon State in the winter of 2008. This is Alex’s third stint on the National Team (2007 U23 lt 4-, 2008 sr lt 2-) and my second (2008 U23 lt 4-).
Alex and I ended up in a pair together this spring after both of us experienced somewhat abnormal winters. At Riverside all of the lightweights row in pairs once the river thaws, but when the ice melted neither of us were rowing. Alex had the tremendous opportunity to run sponsored in the Boston Marathon, and couldn’t pass it up. I had a less tremendous reason for being land bound, as I triggered a recurring rib injury in the last week of erg season. Though we were both ports, we were thrown together in the pair and have continued to improve since a rocky beginning.
Though we are a relatively inexperienced crew, both of us are excited about our speed going into this regatta. One good thing about being a new crew is the learning curve. We are getting faster with every practice, and we are confident that we will continue to do so throughout the regatta. The competition is fairly unknown, so it is hard to set a definite goal as far as place goes. Our only set goal for now is to keep getting faster and to race as hard as we can.
We got to Poznan on Sunday and spent Monday at the course rigging the pair (somewhat successfully). Our trip over was quite eventful, but that is a few paragraphs by itself, so I will save the details for next time. Thanks for reading and Go U.S.A.!
