For the first time in a few years, there will be no Final Three at the US senior Rowing World Championship trials, as all five Final One winners repeated today to win their trials to earn a spot on the 2007 US squad.
Michelle Guerette takes the women's single, Warren Anderson the men's single, Jen Goldsack the light women's single, Ivan Baldytchev the light men's single, and the Larson/Read pair the men's straight pair. Of the five, only Anderson has not yet met the time standard; he will take another shot at it tomorrow morning. The standard is 6:54; Anderson's best time this week was 7:01, but there hasn't been any wind to speak of for the singles races, which have been held first thing in the morning; it's looking like he'll need a little help from Zephyrus to make it.
For at least 1750 meters, however, it looked like at least one final would go another round. With 250 to go and Penn AC in the lead, the men's pair looked headed for a third final this morning. The Penn AC crew had spent all their reserves boring out to an early lead, however, and when the two crews off their port side started humping it for the line, they could not respond; both Larson/Read and Banks/Teti went through, with the pair of Kyle Larson and Jason Read coming out on top for the second consecutive day to take the second final and the spot on the 2007 team.
The men's single was a hard fought race; Anderson led the entire way from what I could tell, but Gabe Winkler, who is notoriously tough over longer distances, refused to concede and pushed Anderson all the way to the finish line; it wasn't really a done deal until the final 10 strokes.
In the other singles finals, however, it was a done deal by the time the scullers were in view. All three scullers won by no less than seven seconds, and up to 15 in the women's single; with heats, reps, semis, and at least two finals, it's a brutally long four days in the singles events (and now five for Anderson), and it's not surprising that when one sculler seems to have very solid racing momentum, they can pull away from an increasingly weary field.
Four spots on the team remain to be determined in a time trial to be held tomorrow morning: the men's eight, men's straight four, light men's eight (taking their third and final shot at it this week), and men's single Anderson. Again this morning, congrats to the new team members, and good luck to everyone racing the clock tomorrow.
