It was another classic trials morning; when I walked out on the jetty at the 500 meter mark in the rain, the light so poor my camera insisted half-asleep shuuter speeds until it wasn't dark anymore, it was just me and a fly fisherman. When he saw me photographing the first race to come through (a one-boater), he asked what was going on. "United States World Championships trials." "Really?!? Where are all the spectators??" Just another day at trials.
Or maybe not - there was hardly a dull moment this morning, Day Two of the US Trials. One crew beat the time standard to make the team, two events were sent to a third final, some steering problems foiled a sculler's bid for the time standard, and one race was stopped at the 1200 meter mark in a "misadventure" ruling that was ultimately not upheld.
In winning their second consecutive final today, the women's pair of Caroline Lind and Lindsay Shoop were the only crew to beat their time standard; the crew finished in 7:18.25, nearly six seconds under their standard.
Only two events will go to a second final tomorrow: the men's coxed four, and the light men's single. Evan Price of PACRA almost exactly reversed yesterday's margin of loss to Tim Larson of Augusta; yesterday Tim won by 1.839 seconds, today Evan won by 1.421 seconds. (As an aside, and this has nothing to do with the rowers - maybe it's just me, but the cheers of "Kill him, kill him" near the finish line in this race seemed other than, say, sportsmanlike.)
The brawl of the weekend looks to be the men's coxed four; today's final was seats apart three across for almost the whole way, with Penn AC avenging yesterday's loss to one of the PTC boats, with a time just 1.2 seconds off the time standard. This goes to a Monday final, where the crews might get the puff of a tailwind that would have put them under the standard. Tomorrow could be someone's day, as the race should be close enough to push the crews the entire distance; you'd think they'd beat the standard so long as they're not too utterly gassed from the past two days' racing.
Marika Page has to be beside herself; she had a great race going, right on the standard, but had some cataclysmic steering problems in the final 350 meters, steering from her spot in lane 3 all the way over to starboard until her oar blades were in lane 1, then back into lane 2 to the finish line. When she got to the line, she had won the trial, but missed the standard by 1.47 seconds - major ouch.
The light men's quad looked like a pretty good race until 800 to go, when the Undine quad caught a digger that put them into the buoys, then snagged a buoy. The official stopped the race at this point; as I understand it, the rules state that, in a trials event, problems of this nature warrant that a race be stopped so long as the affected crew is "in contention" at the time of the problem. (This is the infamous "misadventure" rule.) The Riverside crew stopped rowing, then after a short time paddled to the finish line, probably to be sure to have "finished" the race in the event of a protest. Ultimately, the umpire's misadventure call was determined to have been called in error and overruled, the Undine crew chose not to protest the overruling and withdrew from the event, and the Riverside crew was declared the trials winner.
The men's pair also produced an incredible race - only three Penn AC crews entered, and the crews have been sparring together on the Schuylkill all summer leading up to the trials. That was the case again today, when the crews were within a couple seats well into the last 500. Yesterday's winner repeated today, so wins the trial, but second and third places switched off from yesterday's results. It was like watching Cain, Abel and Seth out there in the primordial mist.
To sum up, Lind and Shoop are on the team, and the LM1x and M4+ go to a third final. All other events have been decided, but will require that the crew make the time standard by Wednesday. Congrats to all the winners, and tremendous luck against the clock.
