The United States' junior women's four won a gold medal Saturday at the 2000 FISA Junior and Non-Olympic Senior World Rowing Championships in Zagreb, Croatia. In total, the U.S. won three medals in junior events. Finals in senior non-Olympic events will be held Sunday.
The junior women's four of Missy Fiesler (Jacksonville, Fla.), Deborah Dryer (Cincinnati, Ohio), Caryn Davies (Ithaca, N.Y.), and Nicole Ginn (Ft. Wright, Ky.) clocked a 6:46.07 to defeat Australia by 3.83 seconds. In the process, the boat became the first U.S. junior women's crew ever to win a gold medal in an event at the world championships. The previous top performance for a junior women's crew was last year when the eight won the silver medal. Both Dryer and Davies were members of that boat. The victory also marked the first time the U.S. has ever won a medal in the junior women's four.
The junior men's pair with coxswain of Mike Lucey (Shrewsbury, Mass.), Troy Kepper (Tallahassee, Fla.), and Alex Hearne (Princeton, N.J.) won the silver medal. The crew clocked a 7:14.19 to edge out Yugoslavia (7:14.42) for second place. Germany won the race in a time of 7:10.82. The second-place finish was the best ever for a U.S. crew in the event.
The junior men's four with coxswain of coxswain Dan McManus (Smithville, N.J.), Fred Fielding (Seal Beach, Calif.), Jake Sattelmair (Rochester, Mass.), Andrew Nowak, (Woodbridge, Va.), and Andrew Brennan (Valley Forge, Pa.) brought home the bronze medal from Zagreb. The crew clocked a time of 6:37.15 to finish third behind France (6:30.12) and Germany (6:31.97).
In the junior women's eight, the gold-medal four of Fiesler, Dryer, Davies, and Ginn joined coxswain Shaina Kennedy (Seattle, Wash.), Caroline Lind (Greensboro, N.C.), Sam Magee (Simsbury, Conn.), Teresa Oja (Sandy, Ore.), and Laura Terheyden (Colma, Calif.) to finish fourth. The crew stroked a 6:21.79 to finish 2.53 seconds behind third-place Russia. Romania won the gold medal in a time of 6:13.81, while Germany won the silver.
The junior men's eight finished fourth in its final, also just missing a medal. The crew of coxswain Mark Albert (Worcester, Mass.), Eric Davidson (Berkeley, Calif.), Mark Hall (Southport, Conn.), Sam Cates (Portland, Ore.), Jonathan Durham (Midland, Texas), Ray Hohenstein (Springfield, Va.), Will Herter (Madison, Conn.), Alex Binkley (Cambridge, Mass.), and Tim Dittman (Malvern, Pa.) clocked a 5:41.74 to finish 2.43 seconds behind the bronze medalists from Great Britain. The junior women's pair of Yvonneke Stenken (Sacramento, Calif.) and Amelia Siani (Concord, Mass.) finished second its "B" final to come in 8th place overall. The crew clocked an 8:11.28 to finish behind Bulgaria.
Junior men's single sculler Shane O'Mara (Tampa, Fla.) finished fifth in his "B" final to come in 11th place overall. O'Mara stroked a 7:47.10, while the sculler from the Ukraine won the race in a time of 7:41.78.
