I just thought that I would share some photos from the Sulkavan Suursoudut regatta in Finland. We have been working here in the rowing market, and this is a unique event. Church boat racing (sliding seat gigs) is big here and this is the biggest. This event has over 10,000 competitors rowing in 14 man +cox boats or 2x boats. It was a lot of fun and I thought your readers might be interested in seeing a historical event alive and well in Finland.
Unrigged Pairs Dock Rowing
Submitted by: Deb Traxinger
(July 13, 2009)
I belong to the Lansing Rowing Club, Lansing Michigan. We just put a new dock in and have been removing the old dock section by section. Each section was moved in some manner down to the local boat launch site and pulled out of the water on a boat trailer. We were "poling" this section down the river using sweep oars when we decided to see if we could "row" it. We could and did actually move it this way. What a hoot. The photo is courtesy of one of our club member, George Benson.
