When I first began rowing in 1963 just below this bridge was where Andover home races started heading downstream. Often the wind blew upstream and combining with the current made a race a wet outing with waves splashing up from the riggers. Floatplanes landed just on the upsteam side and every once in a while a pilot would see a crew just above the bridge and have to abort a landing and go around again. In those days “non point source pollution “ wasn’t much of an issue, it was point source pollution i. e. pipes from factories and mills pouring unknown liquids into the river. The river is much cleaner now, but as with nearly all our waters there remains vast room for improvement.
