According to this report from Japan's Kyodo News service, overseas spectators will be unable to attend the 2021 Olympics in Tokyo, in part to control the spread of COVID-19 in the island nation.
According to the report, a formal decision on Olympic spectators is expected to be reached in the coming weeks after a meeting of the local organizers and the International Olympic Committee.
"On March 3, the representatives of the five organizing bodies, which also include the International Paralympic Committee and the Tokyo metropolitan government, agreed to make a decision on overseas spectators by the end of this month," the report states.
The delay of the Games from 2020 to 2021 have added costs in the billions to Japan's bid to host the Olympics; the absence of overseas spectators is expected to add to the losses. Initially, 9 million spectators were expected to attend the 2020 Olympics, including 1 million overseas fans who had made ticket requests. At this point in 2021, 4.4 million tickets for Olympic events have been sold, tallied against slightly over 800,000 requests for ticket refunds.
