Read Brett's 2008 Starting Five Interview here.
1. How have you prepared differently for this quadrennial than previous cycles?
It's not every four years. It's every day!
2. Did anything completely unexpected happen, or do you have any memorable or unusual stories from your previous Olympiad?
I always look back fondly at the times when athletes from all over the world, once their competitions were finished, would stumble into the Olympic Village cafeteria after a night out and eagerly wait, mouths salivating, for the 24-hour McDonalds menu to turn from dinner to breakfast. Those were good moments.
3. Any/Most important advice for first time Olympians?
You will rarely, most likely never, get another chance like this. Make it count.
4. What was your state of mind like sitting in the starting block of your first Olympic race?
Oh man...oh man...oh man...OHMANOHMANOHMANOHMANOHMAN!
5. What's different this time around/what will you do differently at this Olympics?
This time around will be my last time around. Knowing that, it's time to get to where I missed out in Beijing: the podium.
6. Do you feel older/better/wiser/stronger/other?
Yeah all that. I always look back and picture current me being able to beat up on younger me. Younger me won't know what hit him.
7. Does the phrase "the Olympics" ring differently the next time around?
The Olympics for me will always be freakin' sweet. However, I have a feeling of 'Been there, done (almost) that'. It's the 'almost' that keeps me going. I want to get that. Real bad. And I'm fortunate enough to have earned a second chance.
8. As far as regattas go, comparing the olympics to different races (Worlds, Lucerne), is it a better or different regatta, or just higher stakes?
This is the ultimate regatta. The competition is fiercer than at any of the previous world championships. No one cares how many world championship medals you have. If you don't get it done in the Olympics, you're not worth talking about.
