Deaglan McEachern (Portsmouth, N.H.), Bronze Medal, Men's Quadruple Sculls "We made a mistake in the first 500 and couldn't really recover. We dug ourselves in a little bit of a hole, but we came back. We raced the race and got third, and we're happy."
Julie Nichols (Livermore, Calif.), Silver Medal, Women's Quadruple Sculls "It was a tight race and everyone was pushing hard. That's how this top level racing goes - always a tight margin. Everyone wants the gold, but we're happy just to be here competing."
Sarah Trowbridge (Guilford, Conn.), Silver Medal, Women's Quadruple Sculls On receiving two medals in 2007 Pan Am competition: "It's been a great experience and we're really happy to get the two medals. It's too bad it wasn't too golds, but we're really happy and we thought we had some great racing executed here. We hope that is a good trend we've set for ourselves."
Sebastian Bea (San Francisco, Calif.), Gold Medal, Men's Eight "It feels pretty good. The whole boat really came down the course together. Every time we took a big move, everyone had the same level of commitment and the boat really surged forward. There was no hesitation, we showed a lot of aggressiveness, and a lot of confidence with each other. That's what you want when you go down the course.
"It was a good win. We went all out; that was all we had. I was completely done at the end of the race. It was a solid win for the whole crew and I think we all did our best, and I think it showed at the end."
Ned DelGuercio (Media, Pa.), Gold Medal, Men's Eight "We expected the rough water and we were ready for it. We just tried to clear our finishes down. We knew the other crews would be coming for us in the first half of the race, and it was really just a great, great race."
On getting tossed into the lake: "I knew it was coming, I just didn't know when."
Matt Smith (Woodbridge, Va.), Silver Medal, Lightweight Men's Four On the silver medal: "For me personally, it's great. July 19, 2006, I was driving around Baghdad. I was deployed for a year, and I got back last August and started training again in September. For the Army to let me come here and support me this year is wonderful.
On Pan Am Experience: "This is my first Pan Ams and it's awesome. Rio has done a great job here. In Athens, I didn't get to go to Opening Ceremonies, and we got to go here and it was amazing. Everything here has been done really well, really professionally.
"The venue here is great. You look at the statue and the mountains - this is the most beautiful course I've ever rowed on. This has been a great experience.
On the race: "The first 1000 meters, it is like bath water - it was rolling and really rough. It was just survival of the fittest and not the cleanest of starts. We knew the water would get better as we came along, and the last 1000 definitely got flatter. That's when we were starting to be able to relax and get in our own rhythm. The last 500 I think we went a pretty good speed and were able to start moving through. It was just a little too late as far as getting across the finish line first."
