Single sculler Carling Zeeman of Cambridge, Ontario, will bring home a bronze medal from her first major international regatta - the 2012 World Rowing Under 23 Championships in Trakai, Lithuania.
Germany's Julia Lier won in 08:17.11 and Denmark's Rikke Quist took silver in 08:18.96. After struggling in the first half of the 2000-metre race, Zeeman pulled it together in a dramatic come from behind final 500 metres for the bronze-medal finish of 08:20.76.
"The regatta was an amazing experience for me," Zeeman, a Laurentian University student and also a product of Canada's rowing development program, said today.
Zeeman's bronze medal is the first heavyweight women's sculling medal at a World Championships or Olympics since 1996.
Also today, the U23 lightweight women's double - Elizabeth Fenje (BC) and Erin Snelgrove (Ontario) - was fifth overall in 07:33.83. Germany won this event in 07:23.26.
The lightweight men's double (Dylan Harris and Mark Henry, both of Ontario) were third in the B final in 06:56.85, finishing ninth overall.
Lightweight men's four was also ninth overall in 06:25.39. This crew is Marc Addison (BC), Evan Cheng (BC), Maxwell Lattimer (BC) and Graham Schenck (ON).
Yesterday, Canada won gold in the women's four; the men's four was ninth overall and the women's lightweight single was 13th overall.
"The under 23 team, in particular the women, had a good regatta, with two medals and another finalist," said Rowing Canada Aviron High Performance Director, Peter Cookson. "There are a number of young athletes on the team with one or more years of eligibility for the under 23 team. With additional training under their belts, we expect them to go from learning how to race to learning how to win."
