COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The United States Olympic Committee (USOC) has formally nominated New York City as the official U.S. Applicant City for the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. The nomination was submitted to the International Olympic Committee (IOC) by USOC Acting President Bill Martin.
The deadline for National Olympic Committees to submit an Applicant City nomination for the 2012 Games is today.
The selection of the Host City for the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games will be made July 6, 2005 by the IOC during its General Session in Singapore.
The USOC Board of Directors selected New York City as the official U.S. Applicant City on November 2, 2002. The selection followed an extensive, two-year review of eight U.S. cities that were vying for the right to join an international field of candidates bidding to host the 2012 Games.
"We are extremely proud to nominate New York City as the official U.S. Applicant City for the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games," said Martin. "During what will be an exciting two years, the USOC will work closely with the outstanding team at NYC2012 and do everything possible to support its efforts to bring the Games to New York City."
"We enthusiastically accept the nomination of the United States Olympic Committee," said the Honorable Michael R. Bloomberg, Mayor of the City of New York. "New Yorkers have overwhelmingly embraced the possibility of welcoming the Olympic Games to "The World's Second Home."
"For years, New York City has been the place where people come from all over the world to follow their dreams. We look forward to the next two years as New York pursues its dream of an Olympic Games," added Dan Doctoroff, Deputy Mayor of the City of New York and NYC2012 Founder.
"The global appeal and international popularity of New York City make it an outstanding candidate to welcome the athletes of the world in 2012," said USOC Chief of Sport Performance Jim Scherr. "New Yorkers are some of the most avid sports fans in the world, and that enthusiasm is reflected in their desire to host the Olympic and Paralympic Games in 2012."
"We're deeply grateful to the U.S. Olympic Committee for their vote of confidence and look forward to working in close partnership with them over the next two years," said Jay Kriegel, Executive Director of NYC2012.
